Our Story

Our story began with Mary Kahan, a compassionate individual, who found herself in Chessington at a time when vulnerable people were transitioning from large institutions (known then as Care in the Community). It became evident to many that these vulnerable individuals were now in our local communities with less support than they were used to…

Our incredible journey began when Mary Kahan founded our beloved charity. With a heart full of compassion, Mary set out to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

We opened our very first charity shop, bustling with excitement and hope. It became a hub of generosity, where people could donate and shop for a good cause.

Mental Aid Projects officially became a registered charity, focusing on providing vital support for individuals struggling with mental health challenges. Our mission expanded, and our impact grew stronger.

Social Services faced their first monetary cut-back, which unfortunately prevented the opening of Fircroft House in Ditton Road. Instead, we doubled down on our efforts to prevent hospitalisation and help reintegrate people into their local communities.

During those years, we worked tirelessly to ensure that individuals received the care they needed, right in their own neighborhoods. We became a lifeline for many, offering a supportive network and preventing unnecessary hospital stays.

To make our services even more accessible, we extended our support by providing assistance one evening a week. We wanted to be there for those who needed us.

Between 1991 and 1997, we were able to acquire four properties on Draycott Road. This allowed us to expand and provide a safe haven for even more individuals seeking our support.

In 1999, we purchased a property with the intention of adapting it to suit the needs of older people. However, plans changed, and the property was eventually sold. Nonetheless, we remained committed to finding new ways to meet the diverse needs of our community.

That same year, we made an important decision to establish our charity shops as a separate entity. This move allowed us to focus on enhancing our fundraising efforts, ensuring that we could continue our mission of making a positive impact.

In 2008, we launched an appeal to purchase an unlicensed pub. Our dream was to transform it into houses specifically designed for people with learning disabilities and complex needs. We believed that everyone deserved a safe and supportive place to call home.

The appeal touched hearts far and wide, and in 2011, we broke ground, laying the foundation for a brighter future. It was an exciting step towards turning our vision into a reality.

Finally, in 2012, we proudly moved into the newly constructed houses. It was a moment of triumph, knowing that we had created a space where individuals with disabilities could thrive.
